Play in Peace Day

In 2011 more than 3,000 children, families, and neighbors celebrated the grand openings of Wright Park’s spray and playground and McCarver Park, and also honored Zina Linnik, a 12 year old Hilltop citizen who was tragically killed in 2007.

“It was a day to celebrate swings, spray parks and the resilience, intelligence and courage of children. It was a day for speeches in parks, marching through the streets and celebrating the completion of the Zina Linnik Project,” said Kathleen Merryman in The News Tribune of May 20, 2011.

Neighbors and families now play, learn and grow together in beautiful, renovated Wright Park and McCarver Park. But something more happened at these parks and Metro Parks Tacoma, the City of Tacoma, and the State of Washington agreed this work should be officially commemorated.

Remembering Zina and affirming the strength of our community now happens every year on Play in Peace Day – the third Friday of every May.
